Directly beneath the epidermis are four to five layers of collenchyma succeeded by four to five rows of parenchyma. Although both types contain walls of cellulose, parenchyma cells have noticeably thinner walls that lack any secondary thickening. The stain here is aniline blue which has an affinity for cellulose.
