Vascular bundles scattered throughout most of the stem but with a hollow pith is diagnostic of monocots. Note that the supporting tissue (sclerenchyma) forms a solid ring uniting all the peripheral bundles and so, as in dicots, the hollow column structure is preserved. This provides the stem with strength against bending pressures.
