In this image, the interface between the symplast
and apoplast is the Casparian strip.
The Casparian strip is identified by the suberized (and hence red-stained)
end walls of the endodermis. The presence of suberin provides an aqueous
barrier so that any solubilised minerals and nutrients must enter the
stele via the cytoplasm through the plasmodesmata. |
