The Yellow-Footed Rock Wallaby |
The yellow-footed rock-wallaby, Petrogale xanthopus ('petra' = rock, 'gale' = weasel; 'xanthos' = yellow, 'pous' = feet), is the largest of the Petrogale genus belonging to the Macropodidae family.
This habitat- specific marsupial occurs in relatively
small colonies on isolated dissected rocky outcrops in semi-arid
and arid Australia.
The species has a discontinuous geographical distribution in
the Flinders and Gawler Ranges and the Olary Hills in South Australia,
the Gap and Coturaundee Ranges in New South Wales and a number
of ranges in the Adavale Basin, Queensland. Although once extremely
prolific, the species is now listed nationally as endangered.
