Fungi are found in a enormous diversity of habitats. Some exquisitely complicated interactions have evolved indicating enormous periods of coevolution between fungi and their partners, be they living or dead. Fungi can be easily extracted from soil, the air, plants, animals, and less easily from water. These habitats have a number of characteristics that define the types of fungi found in them.
