
Riftia pachyptila is one of the most spectacular members of Siboglinidae. Formerly ranked as a phylum, the clade Vestimentifera to which Riftia belongs, contains members that are usually found near hydrothermal vents or cold seeps. Other members of Siboglinidae, belonging to Frenulata are found associated with methane-seeps in sediments or with sunken wood.
