The feathery crown of sabellids (and sepulids) is comprised of a number of radioles which are modified grooved palps. Each radiole has numerous pinnules that are lined with cilia and these create a current in the surrounding water. This current passes through the radioles. Food particles are trapped on the pinnules and carried into the ciliated groove by cilia. The ciliary current carries the particles towards the base of the radioles where the material is sorted.
