A Windows/Macintosh hybrid CD ROM was initially produced in 2001 and sold to first year students with the laboratory and lecture notes. The CD ROM contains all the learning modules, self-assessment modules and plugins students might require to access the First Year Biology resources via the Internet. The CD ROM was produced in response to students' requests for an alternative method to access FYB learning resources. The CD ROM is updated annually to incorporate any new or modified learning materials and the most recent version includes an autorun capability, a stylish splash screen and menu pages.
This Authorware module is one of many interactive tutorials available on the FYB CD or online via the FYB Virtual Learning Environment. It was developed as a result of the increasing difficulties in obtaining cats to use in comparative dissections for First Year Biology pharmacy students. Quicktime Virtual Reality (QTVR) interactive object movies, animations and formative assessment enhance the user experience. Other modules in this series include The Immune System, The Endocrine System and The Excretory System.
The “Comparative Physiology and Biodiversity Project” is a series of interactive modules designed to replace wet laboratories dealing with the biodiversity and anatomy of reptiles and echinoderms. The project was conceived as an alternative to traditional animal dissections because of the advantages offered by virtual environments for comparing physiological systems. Virtual dissections are particularly useful for providing information, imagery and physiological details about rare species.
