BIOL2007 Introductory Entomology

This is a general, but comprehensive, introduction to Insect Biology. The topics covered include morphology, classification, life histories and development, physiology, ecology, biogeography, principles of control, toxicology of insecticides and the biology of the major economic pests in New South Wales.

The practical classes give students a working knowledge of the major orders of insects, species of economic importance, principles of collection, preservation and identification. Project work considers forensic entomology and insect-plant interactions.

There will also be an introduction to entomological databases, a library assignment and an assignment which involves the making and presentation of a small collection of insects.
