Cockroach Labium

diagram of labiumphoto of labium

The labium is the most complex of the cockroach mouthparts. The labium is formed from the fusion of bilateral appendages and exists as a single piece. The bilateral nature of the labium is clearly revealed by the presence of the paired palps and paraglossae. The palps and the paraglossae are used to manipulate food. The palps also have a sensory function which enables cockroaches to 'taste' and 'smell'.
