Transverse Section of an Insect Thorax

Cross section through an insect thorax

The insect thorax is a box-like structure and is composed of a number of sclerites (cuticular plates) which play an extremely important role in insect locomotion. The dorsal sclerites are collectively called the notum or tergum, the lateral sclerites are called the pleuron and the ventral sclerites are called the sternum.
