Black Slug Cup Moth

massed caterpillars of black slug cup moth

Scientific Name: Doratifera casta (Scott, 1864)

Commonly known as the black slug cup moth, the caterpillars of this species feed communally and aggregate on the leaf surface. Once the surface layer of the leaf has been consumed, the caterpillars spread out onto other leaves, each inhabiting a single leaf.

The caterpillars are coloured black with rows of white spots and fleshy spikes, four of which, located on the thorax, extend stinging hairs if the caterpillar is disturbed.
