Mottled Cup Moth Caterpillar

mottled cup moth caterpillar

Scientific Name: Doratifera vulnerans (Lewin, 1805)

The mottled cup moth caterpillar belongs to Family Limacodidae, one of the only two families in Australia whose species possess stinging hairs (the other is the Nolidae, commonly known as the gum leaf skeletonisers). These envenomating hairs are tubular and contain a venom or irritant which is produced by a gland located at the base of the hair. When the caterpillar comes into contact with a predator or human the tips of the poisonous hairs break and release their contents which often consists of histamines.
