Bogong Moth

bogong moth

Scientific Name: Agrotis infusa

Bogong moths breed on the plains west of the Great Dividing Range but during summer they escape the heat by migrating to the higher country of the Great Dividing Range and the snowy mountains and high plains of Victoria and N.S.W. The Bogongs aestivate ('rest') in the caves and crevices until autumn when they return to the plains to mate. Australian aborigines took advantage of the aestivation period by collecting the moths from rock crevices. The moths were a rich and plentiful food source for tribes in the area.
