Fungi are found in a enormous diversity of habitats. Some exquisitely complicated interactions have evolved indicating long periods of coevolution between fungi and their partners, and evolution in each habitat. Fungi can be readily found soil, the air, plants, animals, and less easily from water. These habitats have a number of characteristics that determine some important characteristics of the types of fungi found in them.
