Critical Reading

Pre-reading: Predicting

Another important pre-reading strategy is predicting. Once you have a clear idea of what your reading purpose is you can spend a couple of valuable minutes trying to predict the content and structure of the article from your initial sight of the text. Have a quick glance at the title, journal name, authors, key words and article headings to start to predict what the article is about and to see how it is organised.

This helps to create a mental picture of the article which will prepare you for further skimming and for more intensive reading. You will be a more active reader and you will be able to focus on what is important for your purpose.
